Painters’ Painters at The Saatchi Gallery

What is paintings’ place in the crowded world of modern art? Can a painting hold an audience to a greater level than an extraterrestrial object placed imposingly in the centre of the room? Of course art is more than a painting, and a painting is not always the finest form of art however there seems to have been a noticeable absence of great painters recently, perhaps even as distant as the past decade. That being said, it must be understood that painting still stands highly regarded and respected in the art world, with retrospective after retrospective being held to celebrate iconic painters of the 1900s, however since 2000, just two painters have won the British ‘Turner Prize’ award for visual art.

I am unable to categorise all painters of the present day, for the field of what is and what isn't a painting is ever expanding; constantly redefining the meaning of the term. However a noticeable trend has been recently highlighted by the Saatchi Gallery’s exhibition ‘Painters’ Painters’, a group show, crowning Raffia Kalenderian, Richard Aldrich, Dexter Dalwood, Martin Maloney, David Salle, Ansel Krut, Bjarne Melgaard, Ryan Mosley and David Brian Smith as ‘Artists of today who inspire artists of tomorrow’. These painters share common themes; various degrees of abstraction, honest and to some extent lazy brush marks, figurative subjects and sometimes humorous undertones. While Saatchi’s exhibition does a good job of showcasing this specific group of artists and the excellent works created by them, it fails to live up to its contextual claim and seems to be less about celebrating the most prevalent painters of present, and more about showcasing a collection of paintings bought by Saatchi ten or so years ago. The most obvious and shocking missing piece to the exhibition was the presence of even one female painter, which when commenting on an emerging scene in a time when gender roles should hold no significance among artists, is a huge flaw.

And where was the proof behind the context? If these were the ‘Artists of today who inspire artists of tomorrow’ who began work in the early 2000’s, then where is the art they’ve inspired? Eddie Martinez, Torey Thornton, Tuukka Tammisaari, Jonathan Lux, Tschabalala Self, Malike Kara, Dale Lewis, Heidi Hahn, Rose Wylie, Nathan Cash Davidson, Tal R, Cheyenne Julien, Ally McIntyre, Anja Salonen, Dana Schutz, Nicole Eisenman, Michael Armitage, Andrew Stahl, Ryan Schneider, Dan Coombs, Sanya Kantarovsky, Scott Anderson, Samuel Bassett, Jonathan Lux, Andrea Joyce Heimer and Tala Madani are just a few emerging or established figurative painters who show similar traits to those exhibited at Saatchi. ‘Painters’ Painters’, perhaps more suitably titled - ‘Saatchi’s Painters’.
